MAAN
Elegy

Melancholy, sadness, and grief strike us time and time again throughout our lives.
There is no escaping it for nobody.
The older we get the more we have to give up of what we once thought was eternally ours, until in the very end we have to give up life itself.
Although painful it is not only a bad thing.
It is a way to come to terms, to grow. And in the arts, especially music it is a never-failing source of inspiration.
My dearest compositions are filled to the brim with melancholy and sadness as I suppose music does for most of us.
They bring consolation during the darkest, deepest despair.
And they give that hint of a clearing after the dark clouds have come down.
Whether it be Ravel’s “Pavane”, Graingers “My Robin is to the greenwood gone”, The Eagles “Most of us are sad”, Dylans's "Not dark yet", or U2’s “I still haven’t found what I’m looking for”; they console me in my sadness, confirming me I’m not alone in my sorrow and grief and so make it more bearable and even bringhope in dark times.
The best music is “sad" music.

These 10 piano pieces were written during the months after the death of a beloved dog.
As a way to cope with the loss and remember not only what I’ve irretrievably lost but also to remember all the unconditioned love I received from her during the years we spent. I remember sorrow on the last day just before she was put into an endless sleep but joy in our last cautious walk through the woods while a last warm September autumn afternoon hung enchanted among the trees.
Death arrived at 4 o’clock in the afternoon in the form of a lovely young DA lady. And off she went.

Beginning on this project I decided that the recordings should be intuitive, improvised one takers, mostly done at night within a limited range of simple chords and melody. After finishing the recordings I realized they were not just about the loss of this wonderful dog's soul. They represent a universal kind of loss, recognizable for everyone and hopefully in the same way like music so often meant for me, As an escape from the harshness of the world, as a consolation and a healing of the soul.
